Why do the CAASPP Tests Matter

  • 1. College Course Placement:

English and Math Smarter Balance test results can be used by students to prove that they are ready to take college-level English and math courses for the California State University (CSU) system and some community colleges (CCs) through the Early Assessment Program (EAP). Students entering the CSUs and these community colleges who are unable to prove that they are academically ready for General Education English & math courses are enrolled in "Supportive Pathways" during their college/university time that incur additional costs and time commitment. This includes alternatives like required Summer School courses, additional labs, and courses that take two semesters to complete rather than one. Demonstrating readiness for college-level courses through performance on the Smarter Balance tests helps students avoid the extra time commitment and costs of participating in these supportive pathways. For more information about the EAP program see the CSU Student Success website and the Supportive Pathways program site. Segerstrom students are encouraged to prepare for the English and Math Smarter Balance exams and release their scores through the EAP program in order to enroll in college-level courses at the CSUs and community colleges without additional time and cost requirements.

    2. Seal of Biliteracy:

To be eligible for the state Seal of Biliteracy, students have to prove that they are proficient in English and a second language. The State Seal of Biliteracy, which is marked by a gold seal on high school diplomas, recognizes students who have earned a high-level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and one or more other languages. Earning a proficient or advanced level on the English SBAC exam, which is only taken once toward the end of students' junior year, is the first step to demonstrating proficiency for the Seal of Biliteracy.

    3. Segerstrom's Reputation in the Community:

Students' performance also helps shape how our school is seen. CAASPP scores are shared statewide on the California Dashboard and influence how families, colleges, and the community view our school. A strong showing builds pride and strengthens our school’s reputation—for our current students, our graduates, and future Jaguars!
